Bikini season can’t get here any sooner!

With the winter having us beggin’ for some warmth, dreaming about warm summers is seemingly the best way to get by. Trips to the beach, pool parties, and bikinis of every color, size, and shape–now that’s what summer is all about.

It was French Designer Louis Réard who made the risky move to come up with the first bikini swimsuit at in Paris in the year 1946. Since then, bikinis have become a staple of modern fashion. Now you might think you know everything there is to know about bikinis but trust us, these facts that will blow your mind!

1. The Inspiration Behind The Name

Many people believe that bikini is a random name but in reality, bikinis are named after the hydrogen bomb testing which was conducted by the U.S. at Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific.

2. Modesty Police is Not A Big Fan of Bikinis

Back in the day, if you wore a bikini that revealed even the slightest bit of your torso, it was labeled as indecent, even for men.

3. Bikinis Are Ancient

Although the modern-day bikini trend may look relatively new, bikinis have actually been a part of history for quite some time. Ancient people like the Sicilians and the Minoans often wore clothing similar to the two-piece bikini of today.

4. Who Rules the Bikini World? Girls!

It is estimated that around three-quarters of the market in the world of swimsuits caters to women and their swimsuits. The rest of the market is divided and shared between men’s and children’s swimsuits.

5. Speedo is the Largest Swimwear Company

Speedo happens to be the top swimwear seller but that shouldn’t really come as a shock since the company is some 100 years old.

6. Bikinis Are Deemed Sinful

After the launch of the swimwear in 1946, the Vatican labeled the new clothing line as scandalous and ‘sinful.’ But that didn’t stop Hollywood’s power and influence from making bikinis mainstream.

7. Bikinis Have Their Own Holiday

The 5^th of July is considered to be National Bikini day. It marks the anniversary of the day when Réard first introduced his creation in Paris during the mid-1900s.
