For all you expectant mommas out there: I know how you feel, you’ve either spent every second since learning you were pregnant feverishly Googling “ring of fire” or vehemently avoiding all thoughts about the labor and delivery process.
I, of course, spent approximately 37 weeks completely obsessing over pushing a beautiful little baby out of my hoo-ha. After extensive research, I asked my wonderful, gracious OB things like:
Me: “How will this work exactly?”
Her: “You will go into labor and less than 24 hours later you will have a baby”
Me: “Can you guarantee me that I won’t tear?”
Her: “Absolutely not”
“Can we just schedule a c-section and be done with it?”
Her: “Absolutely not”
“How many kegals should I be doing per hour to be sure that I don’t tear?”
Her: “Just whenever you think about it the last month or so of pregnancy”
“Should I use insert Evening Primrose Oil into my vagina to ‘ripen’ my cervix?”
Her: “Please, please do not insert any foreign objects for any reason”
So basically, she gave me nothing. She refused my request for general anesthesia and instead recommended making what she called postpartum pads. Against her better judgement, she sent me back to google to find the perfect recipe. She promised that in the unlikely event that I did tear during labor (I did, by the way, she’s a liar) these (along with copious amounts of pain medicine) would make me more comfortable. SHE WAS RIGHT. I made about 40 of these pads at 37 weeks pregnant during each of my pregnancies.
The witch hazel in the pads provide pain and itch relief while the aloe cools the inflammation and gives a WONDERFUL cooling sensation. The lavender also helps with inflammation and just generally smells amazing. Make sure that you make these frozen pads and take half with you in a small ice box to the hospital. If you know that you will have visitors at the hospital, ask one of them to bring these to you instead of taking them yourself so they are fresh out of the freezer.
- 40 Super Jumbo Overnight Pads-- basically the biggest, most absorbent pads you can find
- 1 C. Aloe Vera
- 1 C. Witch Hazel
- 1/4 C. Lavender Oil
- Squirt Bottle (or measuring spoon to disperse liquid mixture onto pads)
- 4 Gallon size zip lock bags
- Mix aloe, witch hazel, and lavender in small bowl
- Pour liquid mixture into squirt bottle (if you don't have a squirt bottle you can scoop liquid out with a measuring spoon. you will use about 2 Tablespoons per pad)
- Open pads but do not remove plastic backing. Remove Plastic covering on inside of pad (if applicable)
- Squirt liquid mixture onto pad until pad is wet but not completely soaked through
- Rub liquid mixture into the pad
- Ensure that the middle of the pad (where your most swollen parts will be) is sufficiently wet
- Fold pad back up
- Place about 10 pads in a large, gallon sized zip lock bag and place in freezer
- *These will keep for up to 2 months*
- The first few days postpartum, you will want to change your pad each time you go to the restroom. I really liked them straight out of the freezer but some of my friends have preferred taking them out a few minutes before so they're not FREEZING. Whatever you like the best, go for it!
