A Letter to My Son on Your First Birthday

My little bitty, I cannot believe that you are one. Your first year has gone by in the blink of an eye. You have been the perfect addition to our family…we were missing a piece until you made your debut and now, with you, our puzzle is complete. I feel so blessed to have been handpicked to be your mommy. Ever since the nurse called to tell us that you were a little boy growing in my belly, I started dreaming about who you will be.

Daddy and I will spend the next years teaching you everything we possibly can. I’ll show you how to make a mean grilled cheese and Daddy will teach you how to play soccer and baseball. We will do our absolute best to prepare you for the world and everyone in it. These are some things I plan to keep instilling in you:

Choose happy

I’ve already told your sister this, but you need to be told also. Choose happy. Wake up and choose to be happy. You’re so little right now, and your little disposition is to be SUPREMELY happy all the time. I hope that you are always able to choose to see the best in people and in each situation you encounter each day.

This is the day that the Lord has made; Rejoice and be glad in it Psalm 118:24

Be truly glad, there is wonderful joy ahead    1 Peter 1:6

Be mindful of your actions

Understand that your actions affect everyone who loves you- don’t believe lies that you are autonomous and your decisions are only your own. You have a family and friends who love you dearly and want the absolute best for you and your future. Make us proud by being conscientious in your decision making. Stay above the fray when choosing friends and activities to participate in. Remember, if you’re embarrassed to tell your momma about it, you probably shouldn’t be doing it.

Watch the path of your feet and your ways will be sure Proverbs 4:26

Call your sister

Your sister will always be your very first friend. She has been here your whole life and will love you through the awkward and unlovable times of your life. Half of your history has been written by and with her, don’t forget that. Call her when you need advice or when you’re lonely. Call her to tell her about your day and ask about hers. Don’t let the bond that you have now fade after you leave our family home. Be her light when she is in darkness, and she will return the favor for you.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.   Matthew 5:16

Play a team sport

Look, you’ve been born into a competitive family. I apologize in advance for the pressure we might put on you to be the best and brightest in everything you do. While participating in competitions solo can be physically rewarding, you will get an entirely different experience in team sports. Sports will be your first experience with adversity, management, and team building. You will learn to push yourself further than you thought possible for the betterment of the rest of the team. You will learn how to handle disappointment and failure. You will learn how to win humbly and how to lose gracefully. And you will look darn cute in a soccer uniform.

Iron sharpens iron and one man sharpens another   Proverbs 27:17

Don’t grow your ego bigger than your faith

I pray that you will be healthy, intelligent, and get everything you want out of life. I’m also praying that leading a ‘charmed’ life won’t keep you from humbling yourself to Jesus. Please, please believe that your need for Jesus is greater than your need for ANYTHING on this planet and that through Him ANYTHING is possible.

Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith  Hebrews 12:2

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, an no mind imagined what God has prepared for those who love him  1 Corinthians 2:9

Be present

I hope that you are always as in love with your surroundings as you are right now, but in today’s world it is so easy to tune out the people and places around you. Don’t. Put your phone down, turn the TV off, and really enjoy your family and friends. You will learn all too soon that life is so short. Don’t take people or experiences for granted. Call your grandparents. Eat the cheesecake. Strike out a few times.

This is the day the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it   Psalm 118:24

I can’t wait to continue watching you grow and holding your hand through it all. You are my favorite little boy in the whole world. Thank you for being mine!
